14/14 and 21/21 Rotations Explained: What a Two-Week Hitch Actually Does to Home Life
Almost everything written about offshore and FIFO rotations is written for the person building the crew list. It explains coverage, back-to-back manning, and how many people you need on the beach to keep a platform running.
Very little of it is written for the person deciding whether they can sign up for something on a Thursday.
That gap matters more here than in most shift work, because rotation workers get an unusual deal: a schedule that is almost perfectly predictable years out, attached to a life that has to be rebuilt every fortnight. The rotation number β 14/14, 21/21, 2/3 β is the part everyone quotes. It is also the part that tells you the least.
What the numbers mean
A rotation is written as days on / days off, and the industry usually calls one on-block a hitch.
- 14/14 β 14 days on site, 14 days at home. A 28-day cycle.
- 21/21 β 21 on, 21 off. A 42-day cycle.
- 2/3 β two weeks on, three weeks off. A 35-day cycle.
- 28/28, 7/7, 3/3, 4/4 β the same idea at other lengths.
Which one you get is mostly geography and travel cost. Where the workforce has to be flown or shipped in, short rotations spend too much of the cycle in transit and long ones grind people down, so the industry has settled into a handful of equilibria. A 2/2 pattern is typical in the UK North Sea; Norway commonly runs two weeks on against four weeks off; other regions run 3/3 or 4/4 (Orion Group).
The days themselves are long. 12-hour shifts are the offshore standard, which is what makes the arithmetic look so strange from the outside: a 14/14 worker puts in roughly 84 hours in an on-fortnight and zero in the next, averaging about 42 hours a week across the cycle, and ends the year with something like 26 weeks completely off (Tommy).
That last number is why people defend these rosters. It is also why the rest of this article exists β because 26 weeks off is not the same thing as 26 weeks you can use.
The fact that decides everything: these cycles are whole weeks
Here is the structural point that separates rotation work from almost every other shift pattern, and that nobody puts in the recruiting brochure.
14, 21, 28, 35, and 42 are all multiples of 7.
A 24/48 firefighter cycles across the calendar β this month's Tuesdays are next month's Thursdays. A 4-on-4-off worker drifts the same way. Those patterns never sit still against a seven-day week, which is why the people working them stop reading their schedule by weekday at all.
Rotation work is the opposite. If your crew change is on a Wednesday, it is on a Wednesday forever. Your first day home is the same weekday every single cycle, for years. You can look at a calendar three years out and know not only whether you are working, but which day of the week you fly.
This has two consequences that run in opposite directions, and most of the friction in rotation home life comes from people only noticing one of them.
Consequence one: anything weekly is permanently out of reach
A weekly commitment β a Tuesday night league, a Thursday class, a standing appointment, a coaching slot β requires you to be home every seven days. You are home every 28. There is no version of a 14/14 where you attend a weekly thing.
This is worth naming plainly, because it is usually experienced as a personal failing. People try to join the weekly thing, miss half of it, and conclude they are bad at commitment. They are not. The cycle length and the commitment length simply do not divide.
Consequence two: anything on your cycle length is perfectly reliable
The flip side almost never gets said out loud. Because the cycle is a whole number of weeks and never drifts, a commitment pitched at your cycle length is more dependable for you than a weekly one is for a nine-to-five worker.
- On 14/14, a fortnightly Saturday is available every single time.
- On 21/21, a three-weekly slot lands in your off-block every cycle.
- On 2/3 (a 35-day cycle), a five-weekly rhythm holds indefinitely.
Most people never look for the fortnightly version of the thing they want, because the world advertises itself weekly. It is worth asking. A lot of clubs, classes and standing arrangements will meet you at your interval if you tell them what your interval is.
The three numbers behind the number
Two workers can both be "14/14" and have materially different lives. The rotation figure hides three things that matter more.
1. Your crew change day
Fourteen days off contains exactly two Saturdays and two Sundays. That is fixed by arithmetic, no matter which day you fly home β the weekend count never changes.
What changes is whether those weekends are usable. If your crew change day sits on a Friday or a Monday, travel eats the edge of a weekend twice per cycle. If it sits mid-week, both weekends land clean in the middle of your break.
Same rotation, same number of weekends on paper, two different amounts of actual weekend. When you are comparing two postings, compare the crew change days, not the rotation.
2. Whether travel days are yours or theirs
The single biggest variance between employers is what a travel day counts as: is the day you fly part of your hitch, part of your leave, or a paid day that belongs to neither?
There is no universal answer β it comes down to your contract or collective agreement. The good operators handle the fatigue side deliberately: rostering a rest day before travel, on the reasoning that driving straight off the last night shift is a known killer (Tommy).
If you are weighing two offers with the same rotation, this line in the contract is worth more than a small difference in day rate. Two travel days per cycle is 26 days a year.
3. Whether you flip days and nights inside the hitch
Many rotations split the on-block: a run of days, then a run of nights, inside the same hitch. Some sites run dedicated night crews instead. Either way, the changeover is the riskiest fatigue point of the rotation (Tommy).
This is the detail that decides what your first days at home look like. A worker who finishes a hitch on days arrives home roughly aligned to the people there. A worker who finishes on nights arrives home inverted and spends the front of their leave β the part everyone has been waiting for β sleeping through it.
If your hitch ends on nights, the first two days of your break are not really break. Planning them as though they are is the most common way a good rotation gets spent badly.
The part of the pattern that is not deterministic
Everything above makes rotation work sound solvable, and structurally it nearly is. There is one exception, and it is the one that actually generates stress.
The pattern is fixed. The return date is not.
Weather and logistics delays are routine offshore. When a worker cannot get off on the scheduled day, the extra time on site or on standby is normally recorded and compensated (Orion Group) β so it is not usually a pay problem. It is a promise problem.
This produces the strange split that defines the job. You can answer "am I working in March?" with total confidence, years ahead. You cannot always answer "what day am I actually home?" the week it happens.
Those are two different questions, and almost every tool built for rotation workers answers only the first one.
What to do with this
If you are on a rotation, or choosing between two:
- Write down your cycle length in weeks β 14/14 is 4, 21/21 is 6, 2/3 is 5. That number, not the rotation, is the interval your life can actually run on.
- Stop trying to hold weekly commitments. Look for the version pitched at your cycle length, or ask for it.
- Compare crew change days before you compare rotations. Mid-week beats weekend-adjacent, for the same pattern.
- Read the travel-day clause. Two days a cycle is nearly four weeks a year.
- Find out whether your hitch ends on days or nights and stop scheduling the first 48 hours of leave as though it is leave.
- Keep the soft edge separate in your own head. Plan the pattern with confidence. Plan the return date with a buffer.
The rotation number is a recruiting figure. The four numbers behind it β cycle weeks, crew change day, travel-day treatment, and the day/night split β are the ones your home life actually runs on.
