The 4-on-4-off Shift Pattern Explained: An 8-Day Cycle in a 7-Day World
Four on, four off. It's the easiest schedule in the world to explain to someone at a barbecue, and one of the strangest to actually live inside — because your work cycle is eight days long and the calendar is seven. Nothing lines up. "The 14th" means something to you; "Tuesday" doesn't.
The 4-on-4-off runs a big share of continuous operations: 24/7 plants and manufacturing lines, security, offshore and process industries, and — especially in the UK — a lot of policing, fire, and ambulance rotas. As always, the shape below is the pattern in general. Your exact start day, whether you rotate onto nights, and how overtime is counted come from your own employer, rota, or contract.
The building block: 12-hour shifts and four crews
To cover 168 hours a week you need someone on the clock at every hour, which with 12-hour shifts means one crew on days and one crew on nights at all times. Because each of those seats needs relief on the off-block, the practical minimum is four crews. Three crews would put roughly 56 hours a week on every person with nothing left for leave, sickness, or training.
So: four crews, two of them working at any moment, two of them off. What makes it "4-on-4-off" is simply how the on and off days are grouped — in blocks of four.
The cycle is eight days, not a week
Here's the whole pattern:
- Days 1–4: on
- Days 5–8: off
Then it repeats. That's it. Four 12-hour shifts, four days off, forever.
The consequence is the part people underestimate. Because eight doesn't divide into seven, your shifts walk across the calendar. This block might be Monday–Thursday; the next lands Tuesday–Friday; the one after that Wednesday–Saturday. Your on-days slide by one weekday every cycle.
Line it up and the pattern only returns to the exact same weekdays every 56 days — eight weeks. Over those 56 days, every day of the week gets its turn: each weekday ends up worked four times and off four times. Perfectly fair, and completely detached from how everyone around you talks about time.
That's the trade at the heart of this schedule. You get four days off every eight — but you can't answer "are you free next Saturday?" without counting.
Fixed or rotating: the version that changes your life
Two people can both say "I'm four on, four off" and be living very differently:
- Fixed: you're always on days, or always on nights. Your body keeps one rhythm, and the only thing moving is which weekdays you work.
- Rotating (the 16-day version): four day shifts, four off, four night shifts, four off — then repeat. One cycle covers both, so the whole crew shares the night load instead of one team carrying it forever.
Neither is "the real" 4-on-4-off. But if you're weighing a job that uses it, ask which one it is before you ask anything else. The rotating version means flipping your sleep from days to nights roughly twice a month, and that flip — not the shift length — is what most people find hardest. How the hours actually add up
The math is unusually clean. You work four days out of every eight — half your days — so across a 7-day week that's 3.5 shifts. At 12 hours each:
- 42 hours a week on average
- About 182.5 shifts a year (half of 365)
- Roughly 2,190 hours a year at 12 hours a shift
Two numbers worth sitting with. First, 182.5 working days a year against a 5-day worker's ~260 — that's 77 fewer commutes, which is a real, quiet quality-of-life difference nobody puts on the job posting. Second, 42 hours is more than 40. This is not a short-hours schedule; it's a concentrated one.
The overtime quirk nobody explains on day one
Watch what happens week to week. Because the blocks drift, some calendar weeks catch four of your shifts and some catch only three:
- A four-shift week = 48 hours
- A three-shift week = 36 hours
They alternate, roughly. And in the US, overtime for most non-exempt workers is calculated per workweek — not averaged across your cycle. So the 48-hour weeks generate overtime while the 36-hour weeks don't claw anything back. Over a year that can add up to a meaningful, built-in overtime component — which is exactly why some employers price the schedule the way they do.
Two important caveats. Public-safety agencies may instead use a 7(k) work period, which measures overtime across 7 to 28 days rather than a flat week — a completely different calculation (we broke that down here). And outside the US, the rules are different again: UK rotas, for example, sit under working-time rules on average weekly hours, rest breaks, and night-work limits rather than a weekly overtime multiplier.
Don't guess at which regime you're in. The answers live in your contract, your employer's rota policy, and your actual payslip — where you can watch how a 48-hour week is treated compared to a 36-hour one.
What to check against your own rota
- Fixed or rotating? And if rotating, where in the cycle does the day-to-night flip land?
- Which crew are you on, and what's your cycle's start day — that's the only thing that tells you which four days are yours this month.
- How is overtime counted — weekly, over a longer work period, or under working-time averaging?
- How do leave and trades work when a "week" of annual leave doesn't map onto your eight-day cycle at all.
